Alert message sent 21/12/2020 16:35:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following an assault in Wantage.

Between 6.20pm and 6.40pm on Monday 7 December officers were called to Wallingford Street as a group of teenagers had stolen items from a delivery van. The delivery driver, a 39-year-old man, who was with another man, managed to retrieve the items however one had been damaged by being dropped.

The group became abusive and one boy spat at the delivery van and in the direction of the driver, who told him to leave before getting in the van. The offender then stood in front of the van preventing it from being driven away.

The victim then got out of the van and approached the offender, who hit the victim to the side of his head. The victim placed the offender in a headlock to restrain him but was worried about hurting him so let go of him and told him to go away.

Once released the offender hit the victim to his head again and the offender and victim grappled on the ground before the man who was with the victim separated them.

The victim was not injured during the incident.

Investigating officer PC Casper Bangert, of Incident and Crime Response based at Abingdon police station, said: “This was a distressing incident for the victims who were spoken to with racist language throughout the incident, with one of the victims also being physically assaulted. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident as this could assist the investigation.”

If you have any information about the incident please call the 24-hour non-emergency number 101 quoting the reference 43200413487.

Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers 100 per cent anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 15-year-old boy from Wantage was arrested on 7 December on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and was released under investigation.
