Alert message sent 09/10/2019 09:47:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Thames Valley Police can now confirm the final details regarding the funeral of PC Andrew Harper.

The funeral will be held at Christ Church Cathedral in St Aldate's, Oxford, at 11am on Monday 14th October.

Thames Valley Police is working closely with Andrew’s family to ensure we help to plan the funeral to their wishes.

This is a private funeral but we appreciate that people will want to pay their respects along the processional route.

Road closures
To accommodate the funeral procession, a number of road closures will be put in place at 8am to 12.30pm, this will include:
  • The Plain
  • Magdalen Bridge
  • High Street
  • St Aldates – closure is in place from the city centre up to the corner of Speedwell Street
*Please note - Longwall Street will be open southbound, traffic will then able to turn left onto the High Street towards the The Plain.

Please follow @ThamesVP and @TVP_Oxford for any updated changes.

A map of the road closures is available on the Thames Valley Police Website -

Access to businesses/ colleges/ homes
Roads within Oxford city centre will be closed from 8am.

Access to Bear Lane, Blue Boar Street, King Edward Street, Oriel Street, Magpie Lane and Merton Street will be restricted. Vehicles will be able to exit only via the east end of Merton Street via The Plain until 10am. Vehicles will not be permitted to enter the area until after 12.30pm when the road closures end.

Residents and businesses can leave their cars parked on these streets.

The entire route will be controlled by barriers.

Christchurch Meadow will be closed to members of the public.

Parking on the High Street will be suspended for loading and unloading from midnight on Sunday 13 October.

Cyclists will be asked to dismount if travelling via the road closures.

Bike racks in the city centre will be available to use as normal.

Travelling by Bus
Buses will not be travelling through the city centre between 8am and 12.30pm.

The majority of bus routes will be diverted via Donnington Bridge Road. Temporary bus stops will be placed on Iffley Road for those needing to access the city centre.

Please follow @OxfordBusCo or @Stagecoach_Ox for regular updates.

We advise using Park and Ride services to access Oxford city centre including:
  • Pear Tree
  • Redbridge
  • Water Eaton
Car parking is available at the Westgate shopping centre, Worcester Street and Oxpens.

Arriving by train
Both Great Western Railway and Chiltern Railway will be operating their timetables on the day as normal. Please note that services are likely to be busier than usual, so plan ahead and leave plenty of time for your journey.

Paying your respects
The family has requested no flowers. This means that no-one, including members of public and mourners, should bring flowers to Oxford city centre or the cathedral.

Further, flowers should not be thrown at the cortege at any point on the route.

Instead of flowers, the family has requested that donations can be made to the following charities:
  • Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, Aston Rd, Haddenham, HP17 8AF.
  • Blue Cross Rehoming Centre, Lewknor, OX49 5RY.
