Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

This message is dated Friday 4th January 2019 for Windsor.

A strange case - SEXTORTION - everyone needs to be careful, when communicating with people they don’t know, online,  A local resident became ‘romantically’ involved, with someone on Facebook.  The ‘woman’ only communicated via text, rather that facially using Messenger, or by voice.  The victim, now believes it may have been, a scammer man !  Over a few weeks, the ‘woman’ persuaded him, to become intimate online, using the webcam in his computer.  As soon as they had compromising material, they informed him they had copied the footage and would send it, to everyone on their Facebook page unless he paid them £3,000.

Please be on your guard.  You have no idea, who you are talking to online.  Pictures and identities can easily be faked.  We run lots of schools programmes, warning young people about the dangers of sexting and sending intimate photos by phone, even to friends.  They tend to get circulated.

Please consider all the implications of every photo / video, you share online.  There is very simple software used to capture, copy and keep sensitive footage.

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Hello Jeff

I received a text this evening, on my Tesco Mobile number, mentioning a Tesco prize draw and urging a reply, for winners’ details. I did not reply.

However being suspicious and having searched on line for scam info, I entered the link, on my browser and it showed a page offering the prize draw. I suspect that by clicking on the link, I would have incurred a repeating charge of £4.50 per week or similar.

The webpage is convincing. Perhaps you could publish a warning/disclaimer? Notice the addition of .com to the regular tesco.co.uk web address.

Regards

Stephen

NEXT:  Hi Jeff

Another friendly scam email from the TV licensing renewal.  It is headed - ‘only 2 days left’.

The first half does look genuine, but the second half is the giveaway. The link says - do not reply at TV licensing.  So you have to click on a link to a web address that makes no sense whatsoever and has nothing to do with TV Licensing !
Everyone should run their curser over the link, to see where it is actually going, before clicking on it !

Perhaps you can include this explanation in a neighborhood crime update to warn others.

It may stop unsuspecting recipients being caught out.
Best wishes for a low crime 2019.

Kind Regards

Brian

I have also received this from Jo, Richard and others - definitely a scam !
