Alert message sent 09/07/2018 15:08:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

This message is dated Monday 9th July 2018 for Windsor.

FIRST - there is a bike marking / security event on Saturday the 14th July 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Osgood park, Wolf Lane, Dedworth.  This is being organised by the RBWM Community Wardens.  As you all know bikes are being stolen all the time in Windsor - so please bring your bike along so that it can be marked.

NEXT:  We have had a series of Motorbike / scooter / moped thefts.

This happened in Cookham, but the advice is useful for everyone:

8/7 - 9/7  Sunday 11.30 p.m. / Monday 3.45 a.m.  Arthur Close, Cookham.  The owner believes they heard a truck at about 1 a.m.  In the morning they found their motorbike had been stolen.  A white, KSR Moto index RK ** WZA.  They had only owned it for a week.  It was parked it out of sight behind a car on the driveway to prevent it being stolen and it was parked with its steering lock on.  The owner had followed all the correct advice, by parking it out of sight and wedged in behind a car to make it as difficult as possible to steal it.  We suggest at least two locks on bikes - so the same for motorbikes, with heavy strong chains and not just chained to themselves, but to something substantial.  We have had cases of a couple of opportunists, simply lifting them up and carrying them to vans !

If you have one of these, please take extra precautions at this time.  If you chain it up, please attach noisy cans to the chain, or a padlock alarm.  The padlock alarms are available from major DIY stores / security outlets.  They contain a trembler device inside, which activated the alarm if the item is moved.  They also have extra-large rings to go around handlebars, or other areas of the bike.  The can be used as a normal padlock, or by unlocking, removing the ring and reversing it when replaced, sets it, as an alarm.  The padlock once activated sounds at 110 dBs until the battery is depleted, so even if a thief carries the bike away to place in a van - it does happen - the alarm will continue and wake up everyone in the neighbourhood !  Search online sales sites for ‘Padlock Alarm’.  There are many sorts available, to match your needs.  We also recommend them for valuable bikes stored in sheds, along with tools and garden equipment such as mowers - particularly sit on mowers.  If you cannot get a padlock alarm, a long fishing line - invisible at night -with tin cans attached, which can be clipped on and off the bike - works just as well !

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Hi Jeff,

This is a scam - nearly got me, but the only thing that made me wary was the fact I get regular emails from Netflix with updates etc. This one, only went into my spam folder... it wouldn't have done that if all their other ones went to my normal inbox !

NEXT from Duncan:

Hi Jeff

When I turned on my computer this morning, it started ok and then I got a message allegedly from Dell, telling me that there was a hardware problem and to click on a link to resolve it.

I did not click. Then the computer screen went blank. I turned everything off and we were out all day. When I came home I restarted and all appears to be in order.

Possible scam?

D

Sounds like it to me - or possibly a Trojan - hidden in something as Trojans are not removed by Virus Protection.  I would immediately change all the passwords and do a quick scan !!!

NEXT: from Pat,

Hi Jeff,

I have just had a telephone call (recorded telephone message), telling me that my IP address has been compromised in several countries and I need to contact the engineer immediately, by pressing 1 on the phone.

The message also told me they’ve been trying to contact me and my Internet will go down very shortly.  Do you think this is a scam?   I did put the receiver down.

Pat

You did the right thing putting the receiver down !

Sounds like it to me - could a connection to a premium rate number !

FROM: Malcolm

Hi Jeff,

Ref. the telephone scam reported in your alert today, I had something similar today too.

I answered a call, to hear an American accented voice, say my internet connection would be terminated today.  To prevent that, I should press1 to be connected to BT. (I may not have the detail exactly correct here but that’s the gist).  No doubt pressing 1 would lead to trouble – I just cut the call off.

This seems like a new version of the now time honoured phone call, with a far eastern individual on the other end, saying they can see your pc has problems they can resolve !

Others may benefit from a warning as it’s so easy to react the wrong way, on impulse.

Malcolm

Exactly - thankyou Malcolm

Another Tax Revenue Scam email from Karen.
