Cold caller scams/distraction burglaries

There was recently an incident where a cold caller approached elderly residents in the Faringdon area offering to buy jewellery from them. The man was convincing with official looking brochures and was described as ‘charming but pushy’. The residents sold him a couple of pieces of their jewellery but their family were concerned about the man’s intent.

Have you had anything similar happen to you? Please report any similar incidents to us by calling 101 with as much information as you can including any business flyers, descriptions, vehicle details etc.

Please be aware of anyone cold calling and follow the advice below if someone knocks at the door. Please talk to any elderly/vulnerable neighbours or family to also give them the following advice.
•Look through the door viewer or window to see who is outside.
IF you decide to open the door put the door-chain on.
•Never leave them unattended at the front door without securing/locking it.
•Check the caller’s identity badge/card and if you are unsure close the door and ask them to wait
•Independently look up their organisation’s phone number and call to confirm their identity – DO NOT use any phone numbers they may give you.
•Do not feel pressurised into buying items or services at the door. Always get three quotes for any work to be carried out.
•Do not let them into your house and certainly do not give them access to any private rooms such as bedrooms. Do not give any information on where valuables may be kept.
•Remember official visitors will be willing to wait why you check their identity or make an appointment to return (when you might be able to get a family member of friend to be with you).

Report any crimes or suspicious incidents to the police or 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.
