BISHAM, COOKHAM, HURLEY, THE WALTHAMS, LITTLEWICK GREEN & KNOWL HILL:

A warning from Elzebieta your local RBWM Community Warden.

Hi Jeff,

Can you let everyone know about this chap who is out and about in the Cookham area.

We have had a call from elderly, concerned resident.  She says she had a knock at her door.  When she answered it a young man in a hi viz jacket was standing there.  He said he was from ‘Checka Trade’ and had come to do some work on her chimney.  She explained to him that he must have the wrong house, as there was nothing wrong with her chimney.  He replied that he remembered the house distinctly from a previous visit, because of the colour of the front door.  It was definitely the right house.  He then explained that she had apparently already paid a deposit of £30, to have the work done.  He then commented about the nice car on my driveway.

He said her husband, had allowed him to put his ladder up to climb up onto the garage roof, to examine the chimney, which was leaning dangerously and needed re-pointing.

He then went on to ask what was to be done with the deposit, if she didn’t want the work done and then started to change the story, saying it may not have been her husband he met, could it have been her son ?

All very suspicious - can everyone be on their guard.  Bogus builders are out there all the time looking for potential vulnerable residents that can be manipulated - they are very persuasive and have an answer prepared for every eventuality.

Thank you and best regards,

Ela

WE DO NOT BUY GOODS OR SERVICES AT THE DOOR !

5/9  Tuesday noon.  High Street, Hurley.  Attempted burglary.  The daughter of the owner was at home when she heard the doorbell ring.  She didn’t respond.  It rang again and again she did not respond.  She looked out and saw two men standing there in workmen’s clothes.  They continued to ring the doorbell several more times, but she still did not respond.  She went upstairs to look out.  They then went to a side gate, which they forced open, to access the rear garden.  They then looked in the windows and banged on the glass kitchen doors.  One of the men then climbed onto a slanted roof to try and enter an ensuite bathroom.  Suddenly they realised that had been seen, and made off.  The police were called and attended immediately with a dog team to try and track the offenders, but there was no trace.  Can I please remind everyone.  If anyone rings your doorbell, you must let them know in some way that someone is at home and choosing not to respond !  Turn up the radio / tv,  make some noise, be seen at a window, but make sure they know….someone is at home !  AND - if you feel it is suspicious in any way dial 999.  As soon as these men went to the side gate, that should have been a 999 call.  The police would have responded immediately as a ‘Crime in Progress’, put on a containment and carried out an area search and possibly detained the 2 men !!!
