Crime Update Friday 14th July 2017 - Windsor

FIRST: - A REPORT FROM ACTION FRAUD:

 

13/7  Thursday 11 a.m.  Orchard Grove.  The police received a call from a bank to say an elderly customer was at the counter, trying to transfer all their funds into another account, after receiving a call - supposedly from the bank.  They were told that the bank was being investigated and that the account was in danger.  They needed to move all their funds into a protected account, which they gave them as soon as possible.  The bank were immediately suspicious and did not transfer the money.

 

The advice from the Fraud Office was – and I think this is really useful and I would urge you to copy it and keep it somewhere, in case you hear anything like this is happening, to someone you know:

 

Scammers are often very clever and highly skilled at scamming people, but by just following a few straightforward steps, as advised below, it is possible to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

 

This crime, is what is known as an ‘Advance Fee Fraud’ where victims who have already been subjected to fraud, are lead to believe that they can get their money back.

 

  • Be careful about giving out personal information including bank details.
  • Choose, use and protect your passwords carefully.
  • Always install the latest software and security updates and remember that genuine companies will never contact you to say you have a virus and that for a fee it can be fixed.
  • Do not reply or click on links within unsolicited e mails.
  • Do not send money to people you have not met. It is impossible to win a competition or a lottery you have never entered.
  • The Police will never ask you to withdraw or transfer money as part of an investigation.
  • Do not send or upload any information which you would not want shared on social media.

 

Questions carers / friends / relatives should ask:

 

Once someone has already become the victim of a fraud, it is highly likely that their details will be added to what is known as a “Sucker List”, meaning their chances of being targeted again, are considerably higher. Bearing this in mind, it is important that we are able offer advice which can dramatically reduce this possibility..

 

  • Do they receive unusually high quantities of mail ? If in doubt the postman / post woman may be a valuable source of information.
  • Are they receiving lots of scam mail, promising large wins, but requires cash to be sent ?
  • Are they secretive about their mail, perhaps hiding it, so they can open it on their own ?
  • Are they in possession of cheap looking goods - (free gifts) - such as jewellery, health goods and vitamins ?
  • Is mail being hidden around the house ?
  • Are they receiving lots of scam phone calls ?
  • Do they live in clutter ?
  • Do they deny that there is a problem with scams, despite evidence to the contrary ?
  • Are they reluctant to engage, or provide next of kin information ?
  • Do they visit the post office regularly and/or, keep lots of stamps ?

 

Advice for relatives / friends / neighbours:

 

Please find below some suggestions of action which may be taken concerning contact methods and financial transactions:

 

Telephone

 

  • Consider changing all telephone numbers
  • Make the new number ex-directory
  • Consider getting a handset with caller display.
  • Block withheld numbers
  • Consider blocking incoming calls

 

Post

  • Consider mail re-direction.
  • Advice not to open any more scam mail.
  • Financial Transactions
  • Consider power of attorney/limited allowances with next of kin where deemed appropriate.
  • Change bank account/card information if this has been given out
  • Advise local Western Union/MoneyGram outlets of the problem (As in do not serve)
  • Block aggrieved details with Western Union and MoneyGram

Call Blocker Phones:

 

It is possible to purchase a ‘Call Blocker’ phone.  This is in essence a device, which is like having a home receptionist, who allows calls from family and friends straight through, but blocks unwelcome callers.  It electronically asks unrecognised callers, to identify themselves, prior to being put through. These devices do come at a cost, but it may be worth advising aggrieved persons about them, as not everyone is aware that such devices exist.

Age UK Call in Time – Telephone Friendship Service

Call in Time is a free befriending service which matches volunteers with older people to receive a weekly friendly 30 minute chat on the phone. They also provide regular “Good Day” calls to bridge the time gap whilst they are waiting for a suitable match to be found.

An important thing to remember re SCAM emails !!!

 

Dear Jeff,

 

I am on my hobby horse again.

 

Three out four of the scam emails in your message yesterday came from people, they did not know !  I am sure the 'subjects' were unfamiliar with the organisations involved - so, why did they open the e mails ?

 

Clearly, these should have been dismissed as SPAM.

 

With some emails, even the action of opening them can open the door to nasties.

This is a really good reminder, rather than opening emails to see what they are about…. If the email comes from someone you do not know or which appears to be suspiciousDON’T DO IT.  If it is important from a bank / Building Society / PayPal re issues with security – THEY WILL WRITE TO YOU FORMALLY.

 

NEXT – we want to promote The National Day of Remembrance for Honour Based Violence victims.

The annual Day of Remembrance is held each year on July 14th to remember those lost to ‘Honour Killings’, where some families feel dishonoured, shamed and choose to forget.  ‘Karma Nirvana’ remembers and celebrates victim’s lives.

The Day of Memory was inspired by Bradford-born Shafilea Ahmed who was murdered by her parents in 2003, after suffering years of abuse, for becoming ‘too westernised’.  There are an estimated 12 honour killings each year in the UK, although the exact number is unknown.

Slough Women’s Network, was established in 2015 by MP Fiona McTaggart and a group of women from Slough.  They will help women to support each other and to be resilient, in the face of challenges to the safety of themselves, their children and their families.  They hold events to learn about women’s rights, run workshops, speak and discuss topics that matter, so that women can learn and increase their knowledge.

 

They have chosen 14th July for this meeting as it is The National Day of Remembrance for Honour Based Violence victims.

13/7  Thursday  midnight.  Pavilions.  A witness saw a man acting suspiciously around a communal bike shed.  They were then heard banging inside the shed and leaving with a bike.  He is described as about 30, stocky, wearing a black / navy track suit.  A valuable, black & yellow, Norco Charger, mountain bike.  WITH FRAME NUMBER !

Just to feedback what a brilliant Community / NHW Refresher Meeting we had last night in Wraysbury, run under the auspices of the Datchet, Horton & Wraysbury Neighbourhood Action Group and Chaired by Margaret Lenton, the Chair of the NAG.  Congratulations to her husband Cllr John Lenton, who has just been appointed the Mayor of RBWM.  Loads of people there including both Parish and Borough Councillors, who answered questions from those who attended.  We also had Tia and Jamie, two RBWM Community Wardens, who talked about their role in the Community and how they were there to help local residents.  PC Graham Slater, the new neighbourhood Engagement Officer talked about his role and could draw from 8 years working with young people as a schools officer, and his 10 years before that working as a Beat Officer in Dedworth.  Questions were raised re drug dealing in the village and fortunately, we had Graham with us who is a trained drugs presenter, to talk about how the police deal with this issue.  Finally there was my presentation and a question and answer session.  It was a really informative evening with so many people there who could answer everything that was put to them. My thanks to Margaret and the other councillors including Cllr Colin Rainer, who were able to assist everyone there.  I am really grateful for all the time our councillors spend looking after our interests.  We will hold another meeting in September, to feedback on the various issues raised, so watch this space for a date and time.

12/7 – 13/7  Wednesday 9.30 p.m. / Thursday 5.15 a.m.  Business, Wraysbury Road, Wraysbury.  Window forced and the owner has found footprints on the windowsill.  Cash stolen.  There is CCTV footage of the offender.
