POSSIBLE CASH TILL FRAUD AGAIN IN WINDOW HIGH STREET.

A visitor was taking money out of the cash till when a man came up and distracted him.  As the card was returned the man took the card and placed it amongst some envelopes he was holding.  The visitor then realised what had happened and demanded the card back.  He was handed the card back and the man walked away.

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Dear Jeff,
Thank you very much for your well written emails and informative crime updates.
Although I increasingly read with dismay that residents still leave themselves open to target eg leaving car doors unlocked; I always read your emails if only as a reminder to double check my own security. And whilst I have a brain and am security aware your email serves a wider purpose to us in the community to keep our eyes and ears open to our neighbours’ property and furthermore to act together regarding any additional precautions we can take individually eg security lighting, CCTV cameras etc., if necessary.

Eyes, ears and brain – simple and effective advice!

Your efforts and care for our Neighbourhood is very much appreciated.

With thanks

Julia

PS: If of any interest to your readers.  I have a number of double French doors and as an additional security measure, purchased some padlocks, I saw on Dragons Den (www.patlock.co.uk).
Whilst arguably they may not provide a significant amount of additional security, for approx £45 per double door, they are very good in reminding one to lock the doors (very easy to use) and save checking each handle individually; risking inadvertently leaving one unlocked.

Julia

Many thanks for your support Julia.  My aim is always to tell you everything that I, as a local resident, would want to know to make sure I and my local community is protected and we move potential opportunist offenders along
Nothing to see here !!!

Hi Jeff,
You might like to publicise the following, high pressure sales.

I was cold called to my landline, which I found surprising, as I protect this well and apart from a historical involvement with a double glazing company, have managed to keep it off most of the "prime suspects".

The call sounded very official. They said, they were calling on behalf of a ‘Government Scheme’ to remove everyone's loft fibreglass insulation, because of new legislation.

Apparently, my house was on the "government shared database identifying it as one where this work had to be done."  It took a few questions, to establish the name of the company (it was not on Google), but a bit of simultaneous Googling, enabled me to identify it, as a small outfit in Southern England that specialises in spraying the underside of rooves, with a chemical foam compound called icynene.

I won't make any judgement on the process, but I felt the call was quite misleading and if I had followed through with a free survey, by their "qualified surveyors in the area next week" I am sure I would not have got an independent view.

I would urge anyone contemplating this to get a truly independent assessment from a trusted surveyor and try a little "due diligence" by Googling eg "icynene problems". Or take a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2ns7mXG_-E.

Needless to say after the preliminary discussion, I put the receiver aside while the caller continued their lengthy script for a while, before giving up.

Regards

Robin

Thanks Robin, Warning received

NEXT: From Robert:

Dear Jeff

This morning my wife was a victim of an attempted scam,

She was called by an Asian woman, who claimed she owed £985, to HMRC.  She was then threatened with court proceedings and Bailiff's and that she had no time to get the money and not to speak to anybody.

She was then passed on to another Asian man, who claimed he was a ‘Ralf Bucknall’.

He gave her conditions and said she must go to High Wycombe, to the HMRC to get vouchers; because of the holidays and the short time available, she should go to Tesco's and buy ‘iTunes vouchers’.  She must also, leave her phone on at all times.  That is when alarm bells started ringing.

She then called the police and they warned that this was not right and gave her the no. of HMRC, who assured her that they do not work like that.

This has shaken up my wife, and she is worried someone else may be taken in by these people.

Robert

I would have become suspicious and had a good laugh, when they suggested I could pay back money I owed to HMRC with iTunes vouchers !!!!

NEXT FROM MARY:

Hi Jeff
My son in law alerted me that a white flatbed truck was parked outside my frail elderly mother's house in central Windsor.

She has dementia, so we both went straight there. as she lives just around the corner.

They were proposing to ‘pressure wash her drive’. They were polite and left, when we told them to go.

I took a photo of the truck and 'phoned 101.
There were three men of traveller appearance. The youngest was about mid 20s. Slicked back shiny black hair, heavily built, fairly short.

Mary

Thanks Mary.  Can everyone please keep an eye out for their elderly / vulnerable neighbours.  I would have hoped that a neighbour would have phoned the police, so that we could casually walk past and sort out any issues.  We must protect the elderly and most vulnerable members of our community.  That doesn’t mean getting involved, we are happy to go out and deal with these situation – we just need to know about them !  please remember to 101 number !!!

Eyes and ears.....................and brain
